The hidden levers of your organisation, made visible.

The Sensitivity Model

Every leadership team knows the story: a major initiative makes sense on paper, everyone signs off, and a year later you are explaining to the board why it stalled or created problems nobody predicted.

What conventional analysis misses and why systems thinking changes everything

The usual autopsy blames "resistance", "silos" or "culture". That is a polite way of saying:there were structures and feedback loops at work that nobody had mapped.

Those structures are real. Some variables amplify tiny moves into large outcomes; others swallow big efforts without visible effect. Delays, reinforcing and dampening feedback, hidden dependencies. All of this shapes what your organisation actually does, not what is written in the plan.

Linear planning and departmental spreadsheets cannot see that. They count inputs and outputs, but they do not show how the pieces drive each other. Systems thinking starts exactly there.

The Sensitivity Model is the instrument we use to make that structure visible and discussable. It turns systems thinking from a nice idea into a practical diagnostic: what is driving what, where leverage really sits and which side effects you are about to create without noticing.

“Only when we understand the complexity and its inherent interactions in today's systems and embrace it as a resource rather than an obstacle can we effectively guide society's institutions toward greater prosperity.”

Prof. Dr. Fredmund Malik

How the Sensitivity Model Maps Your Organisational System

The Sensitivity Model does not begin with your organisation chart. It starts with
questions like: What really moves performance here? What do people actually react
to? Which tensions keep showing up in different guises?

Together with your leadership and a few key experts, we identify the variables that matter, map the connections between them and examine how changes propagate through the system over time. The output is not a pretty diagram for the wall. It is a working model you can poke, criticise and change.

Typically, a Sensitivity Model brings five kinds of insight into focus:

  • Critical leverage points.

Small, well-placed interventions, a shift in decision rights, a change to one metric, a redesigned interface between two units, that reshape behaviour far beyond their size.

  • Amplifying variables.

Elements that magnify your actions. Used consciously, they make good moves travel faster. Left alone, they can also accelerate problems.

  • Dampening variables.

Rules, structures or habits that absorb energy. They do not appear on any KPI dashboard, but they quietly neutralise even strong initiatives.

  • Feedback dynamics.

Reinforcing loops that drive growth or escalation, and stabilising loops that hold the system where it is. Knowing where these are lets you support the virtuous cycles and interrupt the destructive ones.

  • Unintended consequences.

Effects that will show up in places you did not initially look at: another region, a critical supplier, a professional group. You see them in the model while you can still redesign the intervention, instead of dealing with them as "unforeseen events".

The Sensitivity Model does not make your organisation simple. It makes its complexity understandable enough that you can act precisely instead of guessing.

30 Years of
Systems Diagnosis
Across Every Sector

Over more than three decades we have used the Sensitivity Model in corporate strategy, health systems, urban development, digitalisation, climate adaptation, development cooperation and public sector reform.

The settings change: hospitals instead of factories, ministries instead of business units. The underlying logic does not. Time and again, the model has helped leaders move away from firefighting symptoms and start changing the structures that generate them.

Within the Malik Management System, the Sensitivity Model is one of the basic Malik models, a core way of thinking. It connects directly with Syntegration and the Malik Academy. For organisations already working with Malik's framework, the Sensitivity Model is the diagnostic that makes the entire system tangible enough to work with.

Build the Systems Intelligence Your Organisation Needs

Organisations without systems intelligence pay for it through failed strategies, endless "reorganisations" and avoidable crises. The Sensitivity Model is a disciplined way to cut that bill.

By making your system visible before you act, it lets you design moves that are robust, not just attractive on slides. See the system. Then steer it.
